Maui Wildfires

HAIB Calls for Dana Offerings to Assist Three Buddhist Temples Affected by Maui Wildfires

This past week we have been sharing some of the distress and sadness that struggling family, friends, and neighbors on West Maui have been going through.  Many of us have already taken some action in various ways to help these fellow islanders and their pets.

Three historical Japanese Buddhist temples were destroyed. They are Lahaina Shingon Mission (est. 1902), Lahaina Hongwanji Mission (est. 1904), and Lahaina Jodo Mission (est. 1912).  (The dates are from the book Japanese Temples in Hawaii by Drs. George and Willa Tanabe.)

Our HAIB Board of Directors strongly feels that we need to focus our efforts to assist these 3 temples, their ministers, and members by distributing information on how to offer Dana to help each temple directly.

Hopefully, you are able to make a dana contribution to support each temple. Your generous offering will help support each of the resident ministers, their families, and temple members.

The wildfires, fanned by the strong winds of Hurricane Dora, remind us of how all things are connected and interdependent.  Also, we are humbled by the power of nature. As with the Buddha’s teaching of impermanence, we are sure that Lahaina will recover from the terrible destruction and ashes.

May the Buddha Dhamma comfort you and especially the people of Lahaina during this difficult time.
